Latvian ambassador, Kārlis Eihenbaums’, introduction of the film:

Dear Friends!

I am glad that you’ll have a chance to watch the Latvian film, The Blizzard of Souls, as part of this year’s European Film festival.

I am particularly happy that you will watch it now that we’re celebrating the Republic of Latvia at 102.

The Blizzard of Souls is a historical drama: an adaptation of Aleksandrs Grīns' novel of the same name, written during his service as a Latvian Rifleman in the First World War.

Latvian riflemen are a historic phenomena and heroes of the Great War.

Later on, they took an active part in our national awakening, and they were part of our “revolution of dignity”. Many of them, in one way or another, were part of political processes in those days. And it’s no surprise that during the Soviet occupation of Latvia, the novel was prohibited by the oppressors.

Thank you for joining and enjoy our film!
