Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa met with Latvian Foreign Minister Karinš in Tokyo on 8 February, and confirmed cooperation towards supporting Ukraine, which is being invaded by Russia, and continuing sanctions against Russia. She also agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fields of healthcare, digital, and energy. ​

Latvia, one of the three Baltic states borders Russia has been a member of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and takes a tough line against Russia. The two foreign ministers also exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East and East Asia. Mr. Karinš said, "We would like to deepen our relationship with Japan in terms of security as well."
