Latvia supports effectiveness and efficiency of the multilateral system. International organisations, including the United Nations, must adequately respond to present-day challenges. Therefore, the current reform process to make the UN “fit for purpose” is commendable.

Latvia also supports the need to work towards the UN Security Council reforms in order to increase its effectiveness. Latvia takes part in the UN Intergovernmental Negotiations on the question of equitable representation on and the increase in the membership of the Security Council and other matters related to the Security Council. Latvia supports the enlargement of the Security Council in both membership categories.

In 2021, Latvia joined a cross-regional UN group “Accountability, Coherence, and Transparency” in order to promote greater accountability and transparency in the work of the UN Security Council. Latvia supports the Code of Conduct regarding UN Security Council action against genocide, crimes against humanity or war crimes, as proposed by the ACT Group.
