On 3 February 2026, the US Congress took an important decision for European and Baltic security by approving USD 200 million funding for the continuation of the Baltic Security Initiative in 2026, aimed at reinforcing the defence capabilities of the Baltic states and deepening defence cooperation with the United States. The Baltic Security Initiative allows the Baltic states to purchase modern US military equipment to strengthen critical capabilities such as air defence.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže:

“Latvia greatly appreciates the support of both parties for the security of the Baltic states. This reaffirms the shared understanding and interest of our strategic ally, the United States, and the Baltic states in strengthening defence cooperation and building a stronger and more secure NATO Alliance.

The Baltic Security Initiative and the Foreign Military Financing programme allows Latvia to accelerate the strengthening of its land forces and develop critical capabilities, such as a layered air defence system, by purchasing modern military equipment from the United States.

The Baltic states have proven themselves to be reliable allies of the United States. Latvia will invest up to 5% of its GDP in defence in 2026. Since taking office, I have made eight working visits to the United States. Latvia and the United States share the view that all European allies must invest more in their defence by rapidly implementing the decisions made at the NATO Summit in The Hague.”

For the first time, funding for the Baltic Security Initiative was included in the US National Defense Authorization Act, thereby giving higher priority to the implementation of the Initiative. In previous years, the Baltic Security Initiative received funding through the allocation of appropriations.

We regard the US decision to continue supporting the Baltic Security Initiative as a strong affirmation of the close partnership between the United States and the Baltic states. This represents a direct contribution to strengthening NATO’s deterrence and defence capabilities.
