On 27 October 2025, the Under Secretary of State, Political Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ivars Lasis, met with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Dominican Republic, Lourdes Margarita Zimmermann, and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Bangladesh, MD Mainul Islam, who had arrived in Latvia for an accreditation visit.

Ivars Lasis had a discussion with the Ambassador of the Dominican Republic on the ways to strengthen the political dialogue and economic ties. The Political Director expressed satisfaction with the recently signed air traffic agreement between the Republic of Latvia and the Dominican Republic. Ivars Lasis thanked the Dominican Republic for its support to Ukraine and emphasized the need to continue the efforts to constrain Russia. 

Both the Latvian and Dominican officials were in agreement that the upcoming EU–CELAC (the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) Summit will present an opportunity for strengthening cooperation between the two regions under difficult geopolitical circumstances.

The Under-Secretary of State pledged Latvia’s readiness to protect a rules-based international order, seek solutions to current security challenges, and promote gender equality during its membership of the UN Security Council.

The Ambassador of the Dominican Republic resides in Stockholm, Sweden.

In a meeting with the Ambassador of the Republic of Bangladesh, Ivars Lasis expressed Latvia’s readiness to develop more active bilateral cooperation with Bangladesh. In view of Latvia being elected to the UN Security Council (2026–2027), the Political Director highlighted the interest in strengthening cooperation in international organizations, thereby promoting understanding of current geopolitical challenges. Ivars Lasis called for support to Ukraine through condemning Russian aggression, and for advancement of a rules-based international order and respect for international law.

The Ambassador emphasized the desire of Bangladesh to cooperate with Latvia in multilateral formats, as well as to explore potential for more active economic contacts between the two countries.
