From 5 to 8 August 2025, the Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Andrejs Pildegovičs, is taking part in the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC) held in Awaza, Turkmenistan.
Latvia, being one of the co-chairs of the event, aims at strengthening cooperation between LLDCs and supporting them on their path to sustainable development.
Ambassador Andrejs Pildegovičs, in his address to the participants, emphasized that Latvia is ready to share its knowledge and experience, especially in the field of digitalization, in order to promote the development of LLDCs and help them achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
“Latvia’s experience proves that even small countries can drive digital innovation and offer meaningful solutions to international challenges,” Andrejs Pildegovičs emphasized.
The Ambassador also reaffirmed that Latvia will continue to protect a rules-based international order as an elected member of the UN Security Council in 2026–2027, and he expressed support for the UN80 Initiative of reform promoted by the UN Secretary-General, which would facilitate a meaningful involvement of LLDCs in advancing global progress. Latvia supports LLDCs in the Central Asian region and is open to closer cooperation with countries in other regions as well.
Their geographical location and lack of access to the sea pose significant trade challenges for LLDCs. They rely on transit countries to access international markets, and therefore often require additional support in pursuit of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
