On 28 January 2026, State Secretary Andžejs Viļumsons welcomed the appointed Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Naglaa Naguib, who came to Latvia on a courtesy visit.
In a conversation, both officials acknowledged with appreciation the close and long-standing bilateral relations between Latvia and Egypt, including successful cooperation in the field of economy. Egypt is Latvia’s most important export partner in the region, and in recent years, export volumes have remained stable at over EUR 35 million. A. Viļumsons emphasised that Latvia is particularly interested in cooperation in high added value areas such as information and communication technologies (ICT). Egypt is also a popular destination for Latvian tourists.
As emphasised by A. Viļumsons, one of the most pressing issues for Latvia is Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which directly affects Latvia’s security and future and has serious consequences for global security and stability. The State Secretary confirmed Latvia’s readiness to strengthen bilateral dialogue with Egypt, which is particularly important given Latvia’s current role as a UN Security Council member.
Ambassador N. Naguib reaffirmed the commitment to enhancing cooperation with Latvia, placing particular emphasis on boosting economic ties and exploring opportunities for collaboration in ICT and health sectors.
Ambassador N. Naguib resides in Stockholm, Sweden.
The accreditation ceremony hosted by the President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs is planned in the coming period.
