On 14 May 2026, State Secretary Andžejs Viļumsons held an introductory meeting with Ahmet Cemil Miroğlu, the newly appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Latvia.
Andžejs Viļumsons and Ambassador Ahmet Cemil Miroğlu expressed satisfaction with the good relations between Latvia and Türkiye, confirming mutual interest in strengthening bilateral dialogue, continuing high-level exchanges of visits and political consultations. They discussed opportunities for deepening economic cooperation, as well as cooperation between the defence industries of both countries.
The State Secretary highlighted the close cooperation between Latvia and Türkiye within NATO and expressed gratitude for Türkiye’s contribution to strengthening security in the Baltic region, including through air policing missions. The parties emphasised the need to continue strengthening NATO's deterrence and defence capabilities.
During the talks, the officials exchanged views on the security situation in Europe and the Middle East. The officials agreed that, given the current geopolitical situation, close coordination on both bilateral and international levels is particularly important.
The Ambassador will take office following his accreditation by the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs.
