On 23 October 2025, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andžejs Viļumsons, received an introductory visit from the Ambassador-designate of the Republic of Lithuania, Audronė Markevičienė.
Andžejs Viļumsons and Ambassador Audronė Markevičienė welcomed the close relations between Latvia and Lithuania and their active practical cooperation, especially in foreign policy, security, economy and culture. The dynamic political dialogue between senior officials of state and government was also noted. The State Secretary and the Ambassador greatly appreciated the close people-to-people relations and interest between the two countries, which is also evidenced by the popularity of mutual tourism.
The officials agreed that in the current geopolitical situation, close coordination is particularly important both bilaterally and at the international level in strengthening the security and defence of the region, combating Russian disinformation, and supporting Ukraine. The Ambassador reaffirmed Lithuania’s support for Latvia in the UN Security Council during the 2026-2027 term, and both sides emphasized close coordination on European Union issues, including in preparation for the Lithuanian and Latvian presidencies of the Council of the EU in 2027 and 2028 respectively.
An accreditation ceremony for Audronė Markevičienė with the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, is scheduled for 27 October 2025.
