On 1 June 2026, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andžejs Viļumsons, met with the appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Ecuador to Latvia, Vicente Francisco Albornoz Guarderas, who was in Latvia on an accreditation visit.
During the meeting, the officials discussed opportunities to strengthen political dialogue and economic ties, highlighting the positive impact of the European Union’s free trade agreement with Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador in promoting cooperation between the EU and the Latin American and Caribbean region.
Andžejs Viļumsons commended Ecuador for its strong support for Ukraine, including in votes at the UN General Assembly, and stressed the importance of continuing efforts to contain and internationally isolate Russia.
The Ambassador of the Republic of Ecuador will take up his duties following his accreditation by the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, on 2 June. The Ambassador resides in Berlin, Germany.
Diplomatic relations between Latvia and Ecuador were established on 21 October 1992.
