On 3–4 September 2026 the annual coordination meeting between the Latvian and Estonian Ministries of Foreign Affairs was held in Viru County, Estonia, chaired by the Political Director of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Juris Poikāns, and the Political Director of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Martin Roger.
During the meeting, experts from the foreign ministries of both countries discussed bilateral and regional cooperation between Latvia and Estonia, regional and global security challenges, transatlantic relations and NATO’s role in strengthening regional security. Particular attention was paid to the security situation in the Baltic Sea region, Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine and continued support for Ukraine, the instrumentalisation of migration and the security of the EU/NATO external border.
The participants also exchanged views on current issues on the European Union’s agenda, including the EU Multiannual Financial Framework, strengthening European security and defence, EU enlargement, and the priorities of the Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU, such as strengthening European competitiveness, economic security and the single market.
As part of the programme, the delegations also visited a unit of the Estonian Defence Forces’ 2nd Infantry Brigade, the Kuperjanov Infantry Battalion, where they learned about its missions, organisational structure and combat readiness.
The annual meeting between the Latvian and Estonian Ministries of Foreign Affairs is an important mechanism for coordinating the foreign policy priorities of both countries and enhancing practical cooperation. The meeting provides an opportunity for ministry experts to hold in-depth discussions on current issues on the international agenda and to coordinate positions in a timely manner on matters that are essential to the security and interests of Latvia and Estonia.
For the eleventh consecutive year, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Estonia have organised coordination meetings on a rotating basis.
