On 14 September 2026, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže, met with Arfiya Eri, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, who was visiting Latvia in connection with the 6th Japan-Baltic Cooperation Dialogue. The discussion focused on the implementation of the Strategic Partnership between Japan and Latvia, support for Ukraine, strengthening security and the development of economic cooperation.
In discussing specific areas of cooperation and opportunities to further strengthen relations between the two countries, particular attention was paid to the implementation of the Strategic Partnership between Japan and Latvia established in 2025, including cooperation in the fields of security and the economy.
Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and the international community’s continued support for Ukraine was also a key topic of the discussion. Latvia highly appreciates Japan’s consistent support for Ukraine and emphasises the need to continue working together to ensure Russia is held accountable and to strengthen an order based on international law.
Opportunities for deepening cooperation in the economy, innovation, technology and other areas were also discussed.
After meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Japanese delegation will continue its visit with a bilateral working meeting with Andžejs Viļumsons, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At the conclusion of the visit, the Japanese delegation will participate in the 6th Japan-Baltic Cooperation Dialogue, which is being organised this year by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia.
At the Dialogue, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Japan will discuss current regional and international security issues in Europe and Asia, support for Ukraine, cooperation between the European Union and Japan, including in the field of economic security, as well as opportunities to strengthen cooperation between Europe and the Indo-Pacific region.
