On 19 February 2026, Riga hosted consultations on consular matters between the foreign services of Latvia and Azerbaijan. During the consultations, the possibility of establishing closer ties and developing cooperation between the consular services of both countries was discussed.
The meeting addressed such topics as the establishment of a cooperation mechanism for the rapid exchange of information and the provision of assistance to the nationals of both countries in the event of potential emergencies. The parties also exchanged experiences on the availability of consular services electronically and discussed broader possibilities for the use of digital tools in the consular field.
During the consultations, visa policy matters were also discussed, with particular attention paid to the procedures and conditions for issuing visas to Azerbaijani nationals. Experts from the Latvian State Border Guard also participated in the consultations, sharing up-to-date information and statistics on border crossing and migration.
During the visit, the Azerbaijani delegation also held meetings with representatives of the Ministry of the Interior and the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs to address issues related to illegal migration, the exchange of information on the identification of wanted persons, and other pressing topics, including the potential for signing a cooperation agreement between sectoral ministries of Latvia and Azerbaijan.
