On 28 July 2026, Raimonds Jansons, Latvia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, presented his letter of credence to the President of Bulgaria, Iliana Iotova.
During the accreditation ceremony, the Latvian Ambassador and the Bulgarian President highlighted the good relations between the two countries and discussed opportunities to further strengthen them. The conversation placed particular emphasis on the tense security situation on the eastern flank, highlighting the close cooperation between Latvia and Bulgaria within the European Union and NATO.
The Ambassador expressed satisfaction with the intensification of economic ties between Latvia and Bulgaria, emphasising the two countries’ interest in utilising this positive momentum to develop practical, mutually beneficial projects. Bulgaria’s accession to the euro area was welcomed, as it will open new opportunities for business cooperation, trade and investment between the two countries.
The President highlighted the strong cooperation between Latvia and Bulgaria within various regional formats, particularly within the Bucharest Nine. The importance of the Three Seas Initiative, the strengthening of energy security and diversification and the coordinated action to counter hybrid threats in the eastern regions of the EU was also highlighted. At the conclusion of the meeting, the President extended an invitation to the President of Latvia to pay an official visit to Bulgaria.
Prior to the official ceremony the Ambassador presented a copy of his letter of credence to the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria, Ivanka Tasheva.
The Ambassador of Latvia to Bulgaria resides in Warsaw, Poland. In this position, he succeeded Ambassador Juris Poikāns.
