On 5 February 2026, in Riga, Latvia and Estonia held their annual bilateral consultations on European Union matters. The agenda covered a broad range of matters, such as current bilateral relations, cooperation in regional formats, strengthening transatlantic ties, support for Ukraine, regional security and defence.

The Under-Secretary of State for European Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Zane Petre, and the Director General for the European Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, Siiri Königsberg, discussed cooperation among the Baltic states, as well as cooperation between the Baltic states and the Nordic countries within the NB8 (Nordic–Baltic 8) format. In 2026, Estonia is the coordinating country in the NB8 format and is also holding the presidency in the Baltic Council of Ministers and the Baltic Assembly.

While discussing current European Union matters, Latvia and Estonia agreed to maintain close coordination of their positions on such important issues as the new EU Multiannual Financial Framework, EU enlargement, and efforts to enhance EU defence capabilities.

Both countries consider innovation, technology, and transport connectivity to be key economic priorities.

Latvia and Estonia will continue close cooperation in both bilateral and multilateral formats to boost regional security and cooperation.
