On 9 October 2025, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andžejs Viļumsons, held consultations in Riga with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye, Zeki Levent Gümrükçü, who was on a working visit to Latvia. The officials discussed current regional and global security policy issues, as well as the importance of transatlantic relations in strengthening European security. The State Secretary Andžejs Viļumsons, stressed the importance of all means of support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.

The partners noted the importance of cooperation between Latvia and Türkiye within NATO. The State Secretary thanked Türkiye for its contribution to strengthening security in the Baltic region, including air policing. Latvia and Türkiye share a common understanding of security challenges and a determination to defend the fundamental principles of the international order. The officials emphasised the need to continue strengthening NATO’s defence capabilities. The State Secretary Andžejs Viļumsons, expressed interest in cooperation between the defence industry sectors of both countries. 

Discussing the situation in the Middle East, Andžejs Viļumsons noted the significant contribution of Türkiye in achieving a ceasefire in Gaza.

During his working visit on 10 October, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Türkiye will participate in the plenary session of the Rīga Conference – Security in a Fragmented World Order.
