On 5 November 2025, Riga hosted political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and India. The State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Andžejs Viļumsons, and the Secretary (West) at the Ministry of External Affairs of India, Sibi George, discussed topics of current interest for bilateral relations between the two countries, including opportunities for economic cooperation, the EU-India relations, cooperation in international organizations, and current regional and global security issues.

The consultations were preceded by an introductory meeting of the Secretary for the West Sibi George with the Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs Baiba Braže. The Minister said that India was an important partner to Latvia and the European Union in an increasing economic cooperation. The officials also exchanged views on lasting peace in Ukraine and Latvia’s pressure on Russia through sanctions.

At the consultations, the diplomats noted the positive dynamics of bilateral relations between Latvia and India and expressed their readiness to continue an active political dialogue, including the strengthening of cooperation in the United Nations framework during Latvia’s term of membership of the UN Security Council in 2026 and 2027, with a special focus on shared interests in the field of international peace, security and sustainable development.

Andžejs Viļumsons underlined Latvia’s consistent position on the need to achieve a lasting and just peace in Ukraine, including through further constraint of Russian aggression and sustaining international pressure. It is vital to prevent, as far as possible, the circumvention of sanctions by Russia, especially in the energy sector, through its use of a shadow fleet and the infrastructure of other countries.

During the talks, the Indian delegation was introduced to the activities of Latvian companies in India and the potential of the rapidly growing new technologies in Latvia, including their military use.

Sibi George emphasized India’s desire to deepen cooperation with the EU, and also offered his perspective of current geopolitical processes in the Asia-Pacific region, including the impact of border disputes on regional stability.

The previous political consultations between Latvia and India were held in New Delhi in 2022. In 2024, an Indian Embassy was opened in Riga, and the first resident Ambassador, Namrata S. Kumar, took up office in March 2025. The Latvian Embassy in New Delhi has been operating since 2014.
