On 14 September 2026, at the initiative of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Baiba Braže, a telephone conversation took place between the Minister and Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, to discuss the current situation and future cooperation regarding the search for missing Latvian nationals following the devastating floods in Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.
At the beginning of the conversation, Baiba Braže expressed her deepest condolences to all those affected by the natural disaster. “We have felt the impact of this natural disaster directly here in Latvia as well, as 33 Latvian nationals are still missing,” the Foreign Minister emphasised.
It is particularly important for the families of the victims to receive information about the fate of their loved ones as soon as possible. Therefore, the Ministers agreed that the relevant Chinese authorities would cooperate closely to facilitate the search for and identification of the missing Latvian nationals and to ensure a prompt exchange of information.
During the telephone conversation, the Foreign Ministers also discussed bilateral and multilateral cooperation, including within the United Nations Security Council. At the conclusion of the conversation, the Ministers noted with satisfaction that this year marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Latvia and China.
