On 12 August 2025, in an official ceremony at Riga Castle, the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, presented credentials to the next Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to Ukraine, Andrejs Pildegovičs.
Andrejs Pildegovičs began his career with the Foreign Service in 1994 as senior desk officer for Central Asia, to later assume the post of the Head of the Asia and Africa Division. Has served as Press Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 2000 to 2007, he worked at the President’s Chancery – as Adviser on Foreign Affairs to President Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, and then as Head of the President’s Chancery. From 2013 to 2018, Andrejs Pildegovičs successively held the posts of Political Director and State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Andrejs Pildegovičs has been posted as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to the United States (2007–2012) and to the United Nations in New York (2018–2023); served as non-resident Ambassador to the United Mexican States.
From 2023 till Latvia’s election to the UN Security Council in June 2025 – Ambassador-at-Large, Director of the UNSC Task Force in Riga.
For his professional contribution, Andrejs Pildegovičs has received a Certificate of Merit form the Cabinet, and been awarded the Order of the Three Stars of the Republic of Latvia, Class III.
A private in the Reserve of the National Armed Forces.
Ambassador Pildegovičs has graduated from the Faculty of Oriental Studies at St. Petersburg State University, studied diplomacy at the University of Oxford, and honed his professional skills in a training programme for diplomats at the Hoover Institute. Speaks English, Russian, Chinese, French.
The Ambassador is married, has three adult children.
Andrejs Pildegovičs succeeds Ilgvars Kļava, who has been the Latvian Ambassador to Ukraine since 2021.
