On 30 September 2026, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia Margus Tsahkna paid a working visit to Latvia. During the bilateral meeting, the Ministers discussed current issues in bilateral cooperation between Latvia and Estonia, regional security, the situation in the Middle East, transatlantic relations and current issues on the EU agenda.
Significant attention was paid to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and continued support for Ukraine. The Ministers discussed the need to maintain international pressure on Russia, including sanctions and other measures to limit Russia’s military capabilities and reduce the risk of continued aggression.
Baiba Braže and Margus Tsahkna also discussed the security challenges posed by the instrumentalisation of migration and the need to strengthen coordinated action by the European Union and countries in the region to prevent the use of migration as a tool for exerting political pressure. Baiba Braže emphasised the need to strengthen the region’s resilience and cooperation, including the protection of critical infrastructure.
The officials exchanged views on current issues in regional cooperation, including cooperation within the NB8 and the Baltic Council of Ministers, chaired by Estonia in 2026. Baiba Braže thanked Estonia for successfully coordinating NB8 cooperation in challenging geopolitical circumstances and for placing particular emphasis on Ukraine, and she also commended the achievements of the Estonian Presidency of the Baltic Council of Ministers. Current issues on the European Union’s agenda were also discussed.
Baiba Braže and her Estonian counterpart visited the “Drone House” indoor drone training centre, which is the largest training centre of its kind in the Baltic states. The Ministers also laid flowers at the Freedom Monument.
During the visit, the Foreign Ministers of Latvia and Estonia presented the annual Language Promotion Award (Languages Award). The aim of the award is to highlight and honour achievements in promoting the Latvian language in Estonia and the Estonian language in Latvia.
