On 2 February 2026, in Auckland, New Zealand, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia, Samija Šerifa, presented her letter of credence and extended greetings from the President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs to the Governor-General of New Zealand Cindy Kiro.

In a cordial and open conversation, Samija Šerifa pledged to strengthen bilateral relations, enhance political and economic dialogue, and promote business links in the defence industry, new technologies, the digital transition, and female employment. The Ambassador noted that this year marks 35 years of diplomatic relations between Latvia and New Zealand.

“Despite the geographical distance, Latvia and New Zealand are like-minded partners united in their commitment to upholding the rules-based international order,” emphasised Samija Šerifa.

The Ambassador expressed gratitude to New Zealand for its support to Ukraine, particularly through its involvement in the Drone Coalition, paving the way for practical cooperation with Latvia. Samija Šerifa also highlighted opportunities for cooperation within the United Nations (UN), particularly advancing the Women, Peace and Security agenda, information integrity, and climate change.

Samija Šerifa commended the Latvian community in New Zealand and Honorary Consuls Dermot Ross and John Milford for their role in fostering stronger ties between Latvia and New Zealand. Dermot Ross, serving as Honorary Consul of Latvia in Auckland, accompanied the Ambassador at the accreditation ceremony. Samija Šerifa expressed her gratitude for the special accreditation ceremony in New Zealand, which honoured the traditions and culture of both New Zealand and its guests. The programme included several songs in the Māori language, performed in part by the Governor-General. Ambassador Samija Šerifa performed the song Pūt, vējiņi (Blow, Wind!) and explained its significance in Latvian folklore and culture, including its role in the Latvian Song and Dance Festival.

In her present posting, Ambassador Samija Šerifa succeeds Marģers Krams, who had served as non-resident ambassador to New Zealand since 6 April 2022.

Ambassador Samija Šerifa resides in Canberra, Australia.
