On 15 September 2026, Latvian Ambassador Ilze Rūse presented her letter of credence to the Federal President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, thereby officially assuming the post of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to the Federal Republic of Germany.
“Germany is Latvia’s strategic partner in the European Union and NATO. I will continue to promote the active diplomatic dialogue that is already taking place between our two countries. In representing Latvia in Germany, I will focus on cooperation in the field of security, strengthening economic ties and representing Latvia’s foreign policy interests at federal and regional levels,” the Latvian Ambassador emphasised during her accreditation visit.
During the meeting, she thanked the German President for Germany’s contribution to strengthening security in the Baltic Sea region, as well as for his personal role and commitment to fostering bilateral relations with Latvia during his tenure as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Federal President.
Ilze Rūse is an experienced diplomat who has represented Latvia’s interests in Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg throughout her career. She has held several key positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including serving as Ambassador-at-Large for preparations for Latvia’s presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2028.
Ambassador Ilze Rūse succeeds Alda Vanaga, who has served as Ambassador to Germany since 2022.
