On 30 September 2026, at the ASNI contemporary art gallery, the Foreign Ministers of Latvia and Estonia presented the annual Language Promotion Award (Languages Award). This year, the award was presented to Katarina Magere, an Estonian language teacher at Riga Estonian Elementary School, for her contribution to the education and development of students through teaching the Estonian language and literature and helping them learn about Estonian culture and traditions.
In their congratulatory addresses, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia Baiba Braže and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia Margus Tsahkna thanked Katarina Magere for her contribution to strengthening the cultures of both countries.
The Languages Award of the Latvian and Estonian Foreign Ministries was established in 2010. Its aim is to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries by promoting the learning and use of the Latvian and Estonian languages and the work of Latvian–Estonian and Estonian–Latvian translators in translating literary, political, scientific and other texts, as well as to encourage the contribution of Latvian and Estonian linguists and language teachers to promoting the Latvian language in Estonia and the Estonian language in Latvia. The monetary value of the award is EUR 5,000, and the Award Fund receives equal contributions from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Estonia.
Previous winners of the Languages Award are Margus Konnula alias Contra (2014, 2024), Maima Grīnberga (2009, 2012), Guntars Godiņš (2010, 2013, 2018), Kalev Kalkun (2011), Valts Ernštreits (2015), Livia Viitol (2016), Rūta Karma (2017), Ilze Tālberga (2019), Lembit Vaba (2020), Daila Ozola (2021), Hea Lugu Publishers (2022), and Karl Pajusalu (2023).
