On 14 July 2026, at Riga Castle, the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, presented a letter of credence to Katarina Plātere, the incoming Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to Canada.
Since beginning her diplomatic career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1999, she has gained extensive experience in the Ministry's central administration, working on Latvia's bilateral relations and the European Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy. She worked in the CIS Countries Division, the Baltic, Nordic Countries and Regional Cooperation Division, and headed the Russia Division. She has also served as Deputy Director of the International Organisations and Human Rights Department, as well as Director of the First Bilateral Relations Department.
While performing her official duties abroad, she worked at the Latvian Embassy in Estonia. From 2017 to 2021, she served as Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Latvia to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Since 2023, Katarina Plātere has headed the Bilateral Relations Directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Latvia.
Katarina Plātere will succeed Ambassador Kaspars Ozoliņš, who has represented Latvia’s interests in Canada since 2022.
