On 11 February 2026, an Honorary Consulate of Latvia was opened in Milan, covering the Lombardy region of Italy. The opening ceremony was attended by the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, the Ambassador of Latvia to Italy, Elita Gavele, and Lombardy region’s Undersecretary with responsibility for International and European Relations, Raffaele Cattaneo. Businessman and professor Alfredo Sassi has been appointed the Honorary Consul of Latvia in Milan.
At the opening of the Honorary Consulate, officials from Latvia and the Lombardy region emphasised the significance of this symbolic step in Milan – the need to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Latvia and Italy, with a particular focus on strengthening economic ties. The opening of the Honorary Consulate will provide an additional positive stimulus in this regard.
The event was attended by representatives of the Lombardy region and the municipality of Milan, honorary consuls from other countries in the region, university representatives, entrepreneurs from the banking and pharmaceutical sectors, and members of the media – with a total of around 90 guests present.
Lombardy is Italy’s business centre. The presence of an Honorary Consulate in the region will enhance Latvia’s capacity to provide the most effective support possible to our entrepreneurs seeking cooperation with businesses, educational institutions, as well as innovation and technology centres in the Lombardy region.
Latvia currently has one Honorary Consulate General in Italy, and with the opening of an honorary consulate in Milan, the total number of honorary consulates will increase to six.
