On 25 September 2025, Riga hosted political consultations between Latvia and Thailand. The Bilateral Relations Directorate at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Katarina Plātere, and the Director-General of the Department of European Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, Krongkanit Rakcharoen, discussed the advancement of bilateral relations, prospects for economic and trade cooperation, and topics high on the international and regional security agendas.
Katarina Platere expressed interest in maintaining an active political dialogue, which is essential for promoting bilateral cooperation and allows for the exchange of current information on the situation in various regions across the globe, which is of particular importance to Latvia in connection with its upcoming membership of the UN Security Council.
She also gave an overview of the regional security situation in Europe, including Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and Latvia’s efforts of strengthening regional security and providing support to Ukraine. The officials then discussed challenges to regional security in South Asia, including dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region.
Director-General Rakcharon expressed a desire for closer contacts in business and trade, and she underlined the importance of cooperation with the European Union. Views were also shared on strengthening cooperation in international organisation, including Latvia’s membership of the UN Security Council for the 2026-2027 term.
The previous political consultations were hosted by Thailand in 2023. The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Thailand to Latvia, Arurnrung Phothong Humphreys, resident in Sockholm, was accredited in 24 January 2024.
