Ar Maldīvijas ārlietu ministru Abdullāhu Šahīdu

On 24 September 2022, in New York, during the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, Abdulla Shahid, for a discussion on cooperation between the two states at the bilateral level and in international organisations.

At the meeting, Edgars Rinkēvičs expressed pleasure at welcoming the Foreign Minister of the Maldives to Latvia this past July. The meeting contributed to identifying of prospective areas for bilateral contacts and cooperation in the framework of cooperation between the European Union and the Maldives.

“We want to foster cooperation, especially in the areas of climate, education and science, and trade, including through modern technologies. From Latvia’s perspective, the main sector of cooperation is air transport, on which a bilateral agreement could potentially be signed. We are interested in launching talks,” Edgars Rinkēvičs emphasised.

Edgars Rinkēvičs commended the successful Maldivian presidency of the United Nations General Assembly and he welcomed support from the Maldives for Latvia’s initiatives in the United Nations in the field of media and information literacy. 

The Latvian Foreign Minister informed his counterpart that in 2025, for the first time, Latvia would stand as a candidate in elections to the United Nations Security Council for the term of 2026–2027.
