On 2 July 2026 in Tallinn, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Baiba Braže, met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia, Margus Tsahkna. The ministers discussed current bilateral, regional and international developments.
“Latvia and Estonia are united – we will continue to contain Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, strengthen sanctions and respond jointly to hybrid threats. Our security is based on decisive and coordinated action,” the Minister summarised after the meeting with Margus Tsahkna.
The main topic of the talks was security in the Baltic Sea region and the NATO Summit, which will take place on 7 and 8 July in Ankara, Türkiye. The ministers agreed that it is important to continue working together to ensure that strengthening the eastern borders remains a priority on the agendas of both NATO and the European Union. The ministers also discussed the need to continue coordinating both bilaterally and within the Baltic and Nordic countries (NB8) and other regional formats, with the aim of developing a unified policy to contain Russia. Further strengthening of European Union sanctions was also discussed.
The Latvian Foreign Minister emphasised that the shared understanding among the NB8, as the closest partners, of the threats posed by Russia is an essential foundation for raising broader awareness of the security situation in the Baltic Sea region and expanding the circle of like-minded countries.
The ministers also discussed Latvia’s work as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, maintaining support for Ukraine and keeping the condemnation of Russia’s aggression high on the organisation’s agenda.
The ministers also discussed current issues in transatlantic relations and next steps to strengthen them.
This year, Estonia holds the chairmanship of the Baltic and Nordic co-operation (NB8) format and the presidency in the Baltic Council of Ministers and the Baltic Assembly.
The Latvian Foreign Minister's visit to Estonia is taking place as part of the Latvian President’s state visit.
