On 3 November 2025, foreign diplomats in charge of economic matters and experts from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while on a regional tour to Daugavpils, explored business opportunities offered by Latgale Special Economic Zone and Rēzekne Special Economic Zone, had meetings with businesspeople and local government officials from the region of Latgale, and visited local companies.
The aim of the visit was to promote Latvia’s bilateral relations, showcase investment, economic cooperation and tourism opportunities in Latgale, as well as presenting Latvia’s diverse cultural and historical heritage.
At the opening of the event, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andžejs Viļumsons, noted:
“This is the first time that a visit of an economic nature has been organised specifically tailored for foreign diplomats serving in Latvia, and it has the potential to become a new tradition in economic diplomacy.”
The State Secretary invited diplomats to become acquainted with the untapped potential for cooperation, especially in the field of high technology and innovation, which contributes to the economic development of Latgale. Foreign diplomats also visited local companies, including a producer of devices for authenticity control of travel documents, Regula Baltija, an optical equipment manufacturer Pulsar Optics, and a major global player in industrial yarns, Nexis Fibers.
Diplomats met with Latgale-based manufacturing and exporting companies and discussed possible cooperation with entrepreneurs and other representatives of the Latgale region.
Foreign diplomats visited the museum of the world-famous artist Mark Rothko, as well as having an insight into Latgale’s offer in culture and tourism.
The visit for foreign diplomats has been organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in association with the Latgale Planning Region, Latgale Special Economic Zone, and Latgale Business Centre.
