With the aim of promoting foreign investment, attracting tourists and boosting exports of Latvian goods, on 16 September 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will organise its annual regional visit for heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Latvia, this time to the Latgale region. The aim of introducing the ambassadors to Latvia’s cultural and historical heritage, as well as investment and economic cooperation opportunities in the region, is complemented by the goal of emphasising the importance of strengthening Europe’s eastern flank and the contribution of Latvian authorities to reinforcing the border. More than 40 ambassadors are expected to participate in the tour.
On their way to Latgale, the ambassadors will visit the Koknese (Alaine) manor complex, where Latvian writer Rūdolfs Blaumanis once lived.
In Rēzekne, the guests will visit the “VEREMS” wood-processing plant operated by “Latvijas Finieris” and meet with the Chairman of its Supervisory Board, Jānis Staris. At GORS, The Embassy of Latgale, the ambassadors will be received by Aldis Adamovičs, Chair of the Latgale Planning Region Development Council and Chair of the Preiļi Municipal Council; Iveta Maļina-Tabūne, Head of the Latgale Special Economic Zone and Head of the Latgale Planning Region; as well as representatives from all nine Latgale municipalities.
Chief of the State Border Guard, General Guntis Pujāts, will welcome the guests at the State Border Guard College and the K9 Centre, where he will introduce them to the centre’s infrastructure and the duties of its personnel. From Rēzekne, the ambassadors will travel to the Grebņeva border crossing point in Ludza Municipality to learn firsthand about measures to strengthen the eastern border and the work of Latvia’s border guard service along the EU and NATO external borders.
The ambassadors will conclude their regional trip with a visit to Preiļi Castle.
For more than 10 years, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has organised trips to Latvia’s regions for the heads of diplomatic missions accredited in Latvia. Last year, the ambassadors visited Zemgale; the previous year, they visited Kurzeme.
There are 136 foreign diplomatic missions and 14 missions of international organisations accredited in Latvia.
