On 1–2 June 2026, the regular meeting of the E-PINE (Enhanced Partnership in Northern Europe) format took place in Tallinn and Narva, bringing together representatives of the Baltic States, the Nordic countries, and the United States. Latvia was represented by Juris Poikāns, Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Participants discussed current security challenges in the Euro-Atlantic area, particularly the consequences of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Preparations for the upcoming NATO Summit in Ankara, allies’ joint efforts to strengthen deterrence and defence, and the importance of defence industry development were also discussed. The participants highlighted the need to intensify joint action and societal resilience in the current security environment, as hybrid threats intensify, challenges to border security increase, and risks to security in the Baltic Sea region arising from the activities of Russia’s shadow fleet activities continue to grow.

Juris Poikāns emphasised that, given the current security situation, even closer coordination and cooperation among allies, as well as greater investment in defence, are required. At the same time, it is essential to maintain unwavering support for Ukraine and to continue applying consistent pressure on Russia.

In addition, current issues on the international agenda were discussed, particularly the situation in the Middle East.

The E-PINE initiative was established in 2003 to strengthen US cooperation with the Baltic and Nordic countries. This format serves as an important platform for regular political dialogue on security, foreign policy and economic cooperation.
