On 25 March 2026, The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže, met with the US Ambassador to Latvia, Melissa Argyros, and laid flowers at the Freedom Monument to honour the memory of the victims of the 25 March 1949 deportation and communist genocide.
“We meet on a day that is particularly tragic in Latvian history. This historical experience, at a time when Ukraine continues to fight for its independence and freedom, reaffirms that we must continue to stand shoulder to shoulder in the face of common threats. Our partnership is strong and grounded in a shared understanding of the history and a vision of a secure future. The unwavering and consistent support of the US for Latvia – both during the years of occupation, when it never recognised the occupation of the Baltic states, and today – has been and remains extremely significant, and we hold it in high regard,” the Minister emphasised.
During the meeting, the two officials discussed the long-standing and close strategic relationship between the two countries, as well as its further deepening in the areas of security and defence, energy, and new technologies. Current international issues and shared security challenges in Europe and around the world were also discussed.
