On 3 August 2026, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže, met with Moldova’s top officials during a working visit to the country to discuss Moldova’s integration into the European Union, the security situation in the region, the reintegration of Transnistria, support for Ukraine and the expansion of bilateral cooperation between Latvia and Moldova.
During the working visit, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže, met with the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu; the Prime Minister, Vasile Tofan; and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mihai Popșoi.
During her meeting with Maia Sandu, the Minister discussed the security situation in the region, plans for the reintegration of Transnistria, and Moldova’s progress toward integration into the European Union.
“The terms for Transnistria’s reintegration are determined entirely by Moldova itself,” Baiba Braže emphasised.
The Minister commended Moldova’s achievements on its path toward the European Union and encouraged consistent continuation of reforms. Latvia supports Moldova’s European integration both politically and practically and advocates the earliest possible opening of all accession negotiation chapters with Moldova and Ukraine.
In a conversation with Vasile Tofan, opportunities to expand bilateral cooperation between Latvia and Moldova and to foster closer ties between businesses in both countries were discussed. The officials also discussed the priorities of the government of Moldova, including the continuation of reforms and the strengthening of economic growth.
“Latvian companies are interested in cooperating with Moldova, particularly in the fields of information and communications technologies and renewable energy,” the Minister said.
As successful examples of cooperation, she cited direct airBaltic flights between Riga and Chișinău, as well as the involvement of Latvian non-governmental organisations, experts and companies in Moldova’s modernisation projects.
During her meeting with Mihai Popșoi, Baiba Braže expressed strong support for Moldova’s European integration and discussed further support for Ukraine.
“We highly value Moldova’s accession to the Coalition of the Willing. Let us continue working together to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine,” Baiba Braže stated.
Latvia also provides Moldova with practical support in strengthening security and stability. Last year, Latvia deployed its first civilian expert to the European Union Partnership Mission in Moldova.
