On 15 May 2026, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže, met with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Ayman Safadi, highlighting Jordan's significant contribution to stabilising the situation in the Middle East and its support in addressing the refugee crisis in the region. This was the first bilateral visit by a Jordanian Foreign Minister to Latvia in the history of relations between the two countries.
Both sides confirmed their readiness to work towards developing bilateral cooperation, including in areas of the economy with high added value.
During the talks, cooperation in the agricultural sector was particularly highlighted – Jordan is one of the world’s largest producers of potassium fertilisers, and Latvia is therefore interested in developing cooperation in the areas of food security and the resilience of agricultural supply chains. Meanwhile, the Jordanian side expressed interest in developing cooperation in the pharmaceutical, defence and ICT industries.
Baiba Braže briefed on Latvia’s priorities in the areas of security and defence, support for Ukraine, containing Russia, and work in the UN Security Council. She thanked Jordan for its support in the vote held on 24 February this year on the UN General Assembly resolution on a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. Baiba Braže noted that Russia’s policy of force and aggression is not merely a matter of European security, but a global threat. The Minister emphasised that Russia is brutally deceiving and recruiting citizens of other countries for its war against Ukraine, including from countries in the Middle East and Africa.
Discussing the current situation in the Middle East, Baiba Braže highly commended Jordan’s contribution to stabilising the situation in the Middle East, as well as its support in addressing the refugee crisis in the region. The Ministers condemned Iran’s aggressive actions in the region, discussed the impact of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on regional and global security and the economy, and appreciated international efforts to resolve the situation.
Baiba Braže commended the European Union’s close cooperation with Jordan, particularly in the fight against terrorism, violent extremism, organised crime, and illegal migration. Jordan is a reliable partner of the EU and NATO in the Middle East and the Mediterranean region.
During the visit, a memorandum of understanding on the establishment of a political consultation mechanism between the foreign ministries of both countries was signed, as well as an agreement on the waiver of visa requirements for holders of diplomatic passports, which will become the first intergovernmental agreement in force between Latvia and Jordan.
