On 9 September 2026, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže, hosted Radosław Sikorski, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, on a working visit. The Ministers visited the Ādaži military base, where Polish soldiers are also serving in the NATO Multinational Brigade. The Ministers discussed the defence of NATO’s eastern flank, cooperation between the two countries on border security, support for Ukraine and further pressure on Russia.
Baiba Braže expressed her gratitude to Poland for its significant contribution to the security of Latvia and the Baltic region as a whole. Polish soldiers serve in the NATO Multinational Brigade in Latvia, and Poland regularly participates in the Baltic Air Policing mission. The Minister emphasised Latvia’s interest in an even greater Polish military presence, particularly in strengthening air defence and airspace surveillance capabilities.
The Ministers commended the cooperation between Latvia and Poland in the defence industry. In August this year, a framework agreement was signed for the delivery of several thousand air defence systems to the armed forces of Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Norway.
Discussing the security of the eastern border, Baiba Braže emphasised that Latvia and Poland face the instrumentalisation of migrants by Belarus and Russia on a daily basis. The Ministers agreed that strengthening the eastern border should be one of the priorities of the European Union’s next Multiannual Financial Framework, with funding allocated for infrastructure, technology, military mobility and the capabilities of the relevant services.
The Ministers emphasised the need to continue providing military support to Ukraine, strengthen sanctions against Russia and prevent their circumvention. Baiba Braže stressed that Russia must pay for its aggression and that its frozen assets must be used for Ukraine’s defence and reconstruction.
The parties also discussed cooperation within the UN and other international organisations to maintain the international isolation of Russia and Belarus.
