On 2 February 2026, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže, hosted a visit by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Ghana, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The Ministers discussed bilateral relations between the two countries, opportunities for economic cooperation, the security situation in Europe and West Africa, the implementation of development cooperation projects, and cooperation in international organisations.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže:

“It is a pleasure to welcome Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on his working visit to Latvia. We have met previously, both in the Africa-EU Partnership format and at the Paris Peace Forum. Today, we discussed opportunities to deepen economic cooperation between our countries.

Latvian businesses are already present in Ghana, with cereals, products of the milling industry, and electrical appliances dominating trade. High value-added industries are developing rapidly in Latvia, including ICT and digitalisation, as well as green technologies, in which Ghana has expressed an interest in cooperation. We would like to further develop cooperation in the areas of agriculture and food processing.

We addressed Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and its consequences for the security of European and African countries, particularly food and energy security. Russia’s war is a colonial, imperial war. Russia is brutally misleading and recruiting citizens of other countries, including African countries, to fight against Ukraine.”

In discussions on cooperation in international organisations, Baiba Braže emphasised that Ghana’s expertise is valuable to Latvia as a member of the UN Security Council. International law, opposition to changing borders by force, and new security challenges are shared priorities for both countries.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ghana informed Baiba Braže of the current situation and security challenges, including terrorist threats in West Africa, particularly in the Sahel region, which also directly affect European security. The Ministers discussed Russia’s destabilising role in the Sahel region.

The officials also discussed development cooperation, including the markedly increased interest among Latvian project implementers in working with African countries. Latvia shared its experience with Ghana by implementing a development cooperation project in the field of agriculture last year.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ghana is on a visit to Latvia from 2 February to 3 February. The Minister had a busy economic agenda during his visit, which included meetings with representatives of Latvian businesses and innovation sectors, including IT clusters, Lionpro SF, Fortes Energy, LMT, and others. The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ghana also visited the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia.
