Ambassador of Vietnam arrives on a farewell visit

On 16 January 2020, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, met the Ambassador of Vietnam to Latvia, Doan Thi Phuong Dung, on her farewell visit.

State Secretary Andris Pelšs and Ambassador  Doan Thi Phuong Dung praised the active exchange of visits over the past years, highlighting in particular the successful visit to Vietnam by the Latvian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs. The officials welcomed the new bilateral agreements in education and economic cooperation which were successfully negotiated. The State Secretary noted that he sees opportunities for developing cooperation in education and invited Vietnamese students to actively apply for studies in Latvia, especially in the information and communication technology sector, transport, aviation and medicine.

The officials discussed practical measures in support of businesses and underlined support mechanisms set out in the EU-Vietnam Free trade Agreement and the EU-Vietnam Investment Support Agreement signed last year. The State Secretary recalled that Vietnam is the largest import partner for Latvia in Southeast Asia and the interest of Latvian businesses in Vietnam is growing. Ambassador Doan pointed to the increasing interest in Latvia among Vietnamese investors.
