On 27 November 2025, in an official ceremony, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to the Republic of Uzbekistan, Girts Jaunzems, submitted his letter of credence to the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

During the accreditation ceremony, the Ambassador and the President of Uzbekistan highlighted the good and friendly relations between the two countries, as well as discussing the ways for strengthening them in political and economic fields alike. Uzbekistan’s President commended the work already accomplished, while also calling for joint efforts to increase mutual trade turnover and economic cooperation. Uzbekistan recognizes Latvia’s achievements in the digital, ICT, and AI sector, and is interested in cooperation with Latvia. Uzbekistan’s interests also lie in Latvia as a cooperation partner for exports to EU countries. President Mirziyoyev expressed thanks for support to Uzbekistan in the World Trade Organisation and congratulated Latvia on its very first term of membership of the United Nations Security Council in the status of a non-permanent Member.

Ambassador Ģirts Jaunzems expressed his commitment to promoting economic cooperation between the two countries, especially in transport, agriculture, pharmacy, afforestation and information technology sectors. Latvia is one of Uzbekistan’s key partners in implementing its reforms with the help of development cooperation projects by both the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Central Finance and Contracts Agency, as well as through cooperation projects between universities, public and non-governmental organisations. The Ambassador also mentioned prospects for cooperation in the establishment of logistics centres for e-commerce, thereby connecting South Asia to Europe via Riga and Tashkent, which would simultaneously develop air cargo transport.

The President and the Ambassador agreed to work actively on arranging exchange visits between senior public officials and businesses, as well as improving a legal framework taking into account current cooperation matters.

Before the official ceremony, the Ambassador presented a copy of his letter of credence to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, Bakhtiyor Saidov.

In his present posting, Ģirts Jaunzems succeeds Reinis Trokša, who had served as Ambassador to Uzbekistan since September 2021.
