News Support for Ukraine

On 3-4 April 2023, Latvia welcomed a first ever working visit from the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Pramila Patten, who had arrived to discuss support for victims of sexual violence amid Russia’s hostilities in Ukraine.

The Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gunda Reire, reaffirmed Latvia’s support for the work of the UN Special Representative’s Office and called on the UN to continue providing all the necessary support to Ukraine. The Parliamentary Secretary underlined the need to document and investigate into Russia’s crimes in Ukraine and bring the perpetrators to justice. In cooperation with the non-governmental sector, Latvia has been offering various types of practical assistance to Ukraine since last year. Latvia has established a rehabilitation centre in Ivanofrankivsk, which provides assistance to women, children and their family members who have suffered from war crimes.

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General commended Latvia’s efforts in support of Ukraine through the rehabilitation of victims, as well as Latvia’s position on the matters of achieving Russia’s accountability.

Pramila Patten is visiting the Baltic States to promote and develop cooperation. During her visit to Latvia, the UN Special Representative met with the President of Latvia and his spouse, as well as other officials. Pramila Pattern also visited the MARTA Centre for women in crisis.

 

Background information

Pramila Patten was appointed as the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict in 2017. Her mandate was established through the adoption of Security Council resolution to tackle conflict-related sexual violence.

The mission of the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General is to stand up for the prevention of sexual violence, support the implementation of international standards, and provide assistance to the affected countries in response to victims’ needs.

Latvia has supported the UN Security Council’s resolutions on Women, Peace and Security, condemning sexual violence in armed conflicts.
