On 24 April, the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Artjoms Uršuļskis, met with Ukrainian judges and lecturers from the National School of Judges of Ukraine, who travelled to Latvia on an experience exchange and training visit.

The Parliamentary Secretary provided information on Latvia’s participation in the establishment of the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine, and expressed support for the work of the Claims Commission. Artjoms Uršuļskis emphasised the importance of the rule of law in the European Union integration process, reaffirming Latvia’s readiness to continue supporting Ukraine and to share Latvia’s experience. Supporting public resilience is one of Latvia’s priorities in its support for Ukraine, including through strengthening the work of the Ukrainian Ombudsman’s Office.

Representatives of the Ukrainian delegation expressed their gratitude for the active involvement and support provided to Ukraine by the Latvian Government, society, and non-governmental organisations. The judges emphasised that such visits and practical training are important for professional development, the generation of new ideas, and as a source of inspiration for their further work in Ukraine. Given that the participants provide training at the National School of Judges of Ukraine, the knowledge and practices acquired in Latvia will also reach the new generation of Ukrainian judges.

During the meetings, the Ukrainian representatives learned about Latvia’s experience in the field of probation, co-operation with NGOs, support networks for victims of violence, and violence prevention programs; they also met with civil and criminal judges to learn about the Latvian court system.

The visit takes place from 20 to 26 April as part of the project “Ukraine: Supporting and Empowering Women and Children Affected by War”, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and implemented by MARTA Centre. The project is being implemented from 2025 to 2026.
