On 28 March 2024, Andrejs Pildegovičs, Special Envoy for Global and Multilateral Affairs, and Ieva Briede, Ambassador of Latvia to Greece, participated in political consultations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece, where they met with Maria Theofili, Director General for International organisations and International Security and Cooperation and Special Envoy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the promotion of the candidature of Greece as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

The consultations featured a fruitful exchange on a wide range of topics, including international law, the UN Summit of the Future, the Women, Peace and Security agenda, peacekeeping operations, cyber security, and climate change. Particular attention was paid to ongoing international crises and conflicts. Andrejs Pildegovičs introduced his Greek counterparts to the aspects of the campaign for Latvia’s candidacy in the 2025 UN Security Council elections, and heard a presentation on the experience gained during the lobby campaign for the candidacy of Greece to the UN Security Council.

The discussions highlighted the shared values and interests of the two countries, including the advocacy of the principles of the UN Charter and the promotion of multilateral cooperation.

The consultations provided the Latvian and Greek officials with an opportunity to discuss the ways for closer cooperation in the UN and other multilateral formats in order to contribute to addressing the global challenges and promote the resilience of a rules-based international order.
