Valsts sekretārs Andris Pelšs pieņem Islandes vēstnieku akreditācijas vizītē

On 18 August 2022, the State Secretary of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, hosted an accreditation visit from the new Ambassador of Iceland to Latvia, Harald Aspelund.

During their conversation, Andris Pelšs underlined Iceland’s special role in the history of Latvia. Iceland was the first country to recognise Latvia’s restored independence. We look forward, the State Secretary said, to the 30th anniversary of the occasion to be celebrated in Reykjavik end of August with the Presidents and the Foreign Ministers of the Baltic States in attendance. The event was originally scheduled for the summer of 2021 and postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The present year is a special milestone: it marks the centenary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Latvia and Iceland.

The State Secretary and the Ambassador discussed security related matters and economic contacts focusing on development opportunities in the information and technology sector and tourism. The officials underlined the increasing cooperation between the Baltic States and Nordic countries in the NB8 format.

The Ambassador of Iceland resides in Helsinki, Finland.

The accreditation of the Ambassador with the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, will take place on 18 August 2022.
