On 15 September 2022, the State Secretary of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, hosted accreditation visits from the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Daifallah Ali Daifallah Alfayez, and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Cuba, Beatriz Parra González.

In a conversation with the Ambassador of Jordan, the parties commended the current political dialogue between the two countries both bilaterally and in international organisations. The officials agreed on the need to continue efforts to strengthen economic cooperation, highlighting the areas of information and communication technologies, logistics, transport, and tourism. Topics of current importance for the EU-Jordanian and NATO-Jordanian cooperation were also discussed, the State Secretary welcoming Jordan’s active role in the cooperation of the EU’s Southern Neighbourhood and NATO’s Mediterranean Dialogue. In an exchange of views on latest regional developments, the State Secretary set out Latvia’s position concerning the aggression of Russia against Ukraine and underlined Russia’s responsibility for the war and its consequences. The Jordanian Ambassador, for his part, provided information on the state of play in the Middle East, with special attention directed to the Israel-Palestine dialogue and the situation in Syria.

In a conversation with the Ambassador of Cuba, the State Secretary informed her about the security climate in the region and Latvia’s assistance to Ukraine, while underlining the significance of the multilateral system for regional and global peace and security. Andris Pelšs introduced Beatriz Parra González to Latvia’s initiatives in the United Nations and he confirmed Latvia’s interest in cooperating with Cuba both bilaterally and as part of relations between the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (EU-CELAC). The officials expressed interest in expanding mutual trade and considering opportunities for cooperation in the digital sector.

The Ambassador of Jordan resides in The Hague, the Netherlands, and the Ambassador of Cuba, in Helsinki, Finland.

The accreditation of the Ambassadors with the President of Latvia has been scheduled for 16 September 2022.
