On 10 October 2022, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelšs, welcomed an accreditation visit from the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Peru, Eric Edgardo Guillermo Anderson Machado Manuel Alhama Orenes.

The State Secretary and the Ambassador were in agreement that work should be undertaken to expand bilateral relations, including economic cooperation. The State Secretary highlighted the information technologies sector as potentially the most successful area of cooperation; the Ambassador for his part provided information on the  Pacific Alliance, a Latin American trade bloc, formed by Peru, Mexico, Chile, and Colombia.

The Peruvian Ambassador called for intensifying cooperation in the education sector through ensuring student exchange. Andris Pelšs suggested that opportunities for working together be sought in the framework of the Erasmus + programme.

The officials recognised that Latvia and Peru had a uniform position concerning Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, The State Secretary and the Ambassador were unanimous that work should continue in the United Nations system to hold Russia accountable for war crimes it had perpetrated.

The Ambassador of Peru resides in Helsinki, Finland. The Ambassador’s accreditation with the President of Latvia has been scheduled for 11 October 2022.
