Foreign Ministry Announcement upon his passing
The Latvian Foreign Ministry regrets to announce the sad news that our esteemed colleague, Pēteris Kārlis Elferts, the Latvian Ambassador to Greece, passed away in Athens on 28 May. We offer our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, and share their sorrow. Ambassador Elferts will remain in our memories as a person who was positive, bright, considerate, and kind-hearted. Dear Pēteris, we will miss you.
Pēteris Kārlis Elferts began his career with the Foreign Service in 1999. He has worked as Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador-at-Large for the renewal of Iraq and promotion of democracy, Latvia’s Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to Ireland, as well as Advisor to the Speaker of the Saeima (the Latvian Parliament) and Advisor to the Prime Minister.
In his diplomatic work, Pēteris Elferts was closely engaged with the Latvian community abroad both during his postings to foreign countries and as Ambassador-at-Large for the Diaspora.
From 2016 to 2020, Pēteris Kārlis Elferts was posted as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to the Republic of Turkey and since 2020, as Ambassador to the Hellenic Republic. Ambassador Elferts has also served as non-resident Ambassador to Iran and Iraq.
