On 26 May 2026, the meeting of the EU General Affairs Council will take place in Brussels where Latvia will be represented by the Parliamentary Secretary, Artjoms Uršuļskis.

The meeting is planned to include an exchange of views on the topics to be discussed at the European Council meeting on 18–20 June: Russia’s war in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, EU’s outer competitiveness, EU security and defence, migration and the fight against illicit drugs. There will also be a discussion on the EU Multiannual Financial Framework, focusing on its role in strengthening the single market and the EU’s global competitiveness.

Representatives of the Member States will discuss current issues regarding EU–UK relations. Meanwhile, as part of the EU rule of law dialogue, discussions will take place on the rule of law situation in four Member States: France, Croatia, Italy, and Latvia. The discussions will be based on the European Commission’s annual EU Rule of Law Report 2025 and the recommendations set forth therein. The report on the situation in Latvia is positive.

The General Affairs Council examines matters concerning more than one EU policy, such as negotiations on EU enlargement, preparations for the European Council, the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework, as well as the rule of law, institutional and administrative matters.
