On 24 February 2026, the meeting of the EU General Affairs Council will take place in Brussels where Latvia will be represented by the Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Artjoms Uršuļskis.
The meeting will include an exchange of views on the draft agenda for the European Council meeting on 19–20 March, which covers issues such as Russia’s war in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, competitiveness and the single market, the next EU Multiannual Financial Framework, security and defence, and migration.
The Council also intends to hold an informal discussion on establishing a European Centre for Democratic Resilience, one of the measures outlined in the European Democracy Shield initiative of the European Commission, published in November 2025, which seeks to enhance EU-level cooperation and coordination in the protection of democracy.
The General Affairs Council examines matters concerning more than one EU policy, such as negotiations on EU enlargement, preparations for the European Council, the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework, as well as the rule of law, institutional and administrative matters.
