On 13 October 2026, a meeting of the EU General Affairs Council will take place in Luxembourg, where Latvia will be represented by Parliamentary Secretary Dace Melbārde.
The meeting is planned to include an exchange of views on the draft conclusions of the European Council meeting on 15–16 October, covering issues such as Russia’s war against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, EU security and enlargement, security and defence, migration and competitiveness. There will also be a discussion on the EU Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028–2034, focusing on the updated negotiating framework document, known as the NegoBox, prepared by the Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU.
The Irish Presidency will provide an update on the latest developments and next steps in the process of simplifying EU legislation, as well as on the current situation in Hungary regarding respect for EU values. It is also planned to approve the Council’s conclusions on inclusive democratic participation and societal resilience.
An informal lunch discussion on the review of the EU’s pre-enlargement policy is also scheduled.
The General Affairs Council examines matters concerning more than one EU policy, such as negotiations on EU enlargement, preparations for the European Council, the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework, as well as the rule of law, institutional and administrative matters.
