On 22 September 2026, the meeting of the EU General Affairs Council will take place in Brussels where Latvia will be represented by the Parliamentary Secretary, Dace Melbārde.
The meeting is planned to include an exchange of views on the agenda of the European Council meeting on 15–16 October, covering issues such as Russia’s war against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, the EU enlargement, security and defence, migration and competitiveness. There will also be a discussion on the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028–2034.
The Irish Presidency will provide an update on the process of simplifying EU legislation and on the next steps. Representatives of the Member States will be briefed on the seventh report on the rule of law situation in the EU and in the four candidate countries – Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia – and will hear a presentation from the European Commission on legislative initiatives planned for 2027.
The General Affairs Council examines matters concerning more than one EU policy, such as negotiations on EU enlargement, preparations for the European Council, the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework, as well as the rule of law, institutional and administrative matters.
