On 1 December 2021 in Riga, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, met with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell Fontelles. The officials discussed the hybrid attack by Belarus on the EU’s external border and the security situation in Ukraine and Central Asia.

Edgars Rinkēvičs underlined that over the past weeks the EU has demonstrated resolve and is currently working in three directions – an active external action, support to the countries affected by hybrid threat – Latvia, Lithuania and Poland – in terms of funding, human resources, materials and equipment, as well as preventive measures in relation to transport companies involved in or supporting human trafficking.

The Latvian Foreign Minister called on the EU to continue engaging with the countries of origin and transit who support illegal crossing of the EU’s external border and to impose new sanctions on Lukashenko’s regime.
